The Spanish Navy frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ (F-104) has just returned to her homeport in Ferrol after training with US Navy units. The frigate has participated in the ‘Composite Training Unit’ (C2X) certification exercise, which assessed the readiness of the ‘Abraham Lincoln’ Carrier Strike Group. The frigate visited the US port of Norfolk (Virginia) and Charleston (South Caroline).
After a brief stop in Charleston for crew rest, the ‘Méndez Núñez’, with a complement of 215 people (25 of them, women), started her voyage back to Spain, having sailed more than 15,000 nautical miles.
The ‘Méndez Núñez’ plans to complete her logistic readiness in Ferrol prior to the forthcoming cooperative deployment with the U.S. Navy CSG which will take her around the globe during 2019, coinciding with the 500 Anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world completed by Juan Sebastián de Elcano.
