The training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ has received from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) the highest certificate of responsibility (Grade A+) acknowledging her commitment and compliance with restrictions implemented at the Stellwagen whale sanctuary in the North Atlantic.
During her 91st training cruise, specifically between January and May 2019, the vessel transited the area called ‘Stellwgen Bank National Marine Sanctuary’, recognized by the NOAA, where all ships are requested to comply with the program of responsibility that helps reduce the possible deaths or injuries caused to these cetaceans due to collisions at sea. To this end, the NOAA established speed restrictions of less than 10 knots in this area.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a scientific agency of the US Department of Commerce, whose activities focus on the conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere. This agency issues warnings about adverse weather conditions, guides on the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources, and conducts studies to improve the understanding and administration of the environment.
