Between January 30 and February 3, the training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ made a port call in the Brazilian city of Recife as part of her 92nd Training Cruise. This is the tenth time the Spanish Navy brig-schooner has visited the capital of the state of Pernambuco, the last time being in 2016.

After docking in the port of Recife, the Ambassador of Spain to Brazil, the Consul General and the Honorary Consul of Spain in Recife were welcomed on board. The Commanding Officer of the ship visited later different Brazilian military authorities.

Among the institutional activities carried out, a protocol luncheon was hosted on board, attended by several civilian and military authorities; also a reception with more than 150 guests, among them an ample representation of the Spanish community residing in this city and members of the Brazilian Navy; a solemn Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag ceremony was also arranged for 12 civilians. In addition, a press conference on board took place with members of the local media.

Another day, several midshipmen and members of the ship’s crew had the opportunity to fraternize with fellow members of the Brazilian Navy playing a football match and visiting famous places in Recife and the neighboring colonial city of Olinda, declared a World Heritage Site.

The ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ was visited by more than 1000 people during the two open days that were purposely scheduled.

The ship left the city of Recife last Monday towards the island of Curacao (Kingdom of the Netherlands) where she will arrive on February 22.
