The Spanish Navy training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ arrives at Guam (USA).

Tuesday, March 2nd 2021

The Spanish Navy training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ arrived at the isle of Guam a few days ago and is scheduled to remain in that port until March 2. The ship docked at the US Naval Base but the crew was confined onboard as a result of the COVID-related health measures implemented. The crew could only leave the ship and visit the designated sports or recreational facilities with restricted access for their exclusive use.

After crossing practically the entire Pacific Ocean under sail, using the maritime route of the so-called ‘Manila Galleon’, the ship will then set out to travel through the Philippine and Indonesian archipelagos.

The training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ is conducting her 93rd Training Cruise, which includes a round-the-world trip as one of the events to celebrate the 500 anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe. The ship set sail from the city of Cadiz last August 24, and during the next 10 months, the ship plans to call at the most relevant places that the Spanish expedition of Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian de Elcano visited 500 years ago.

The ship's main task is to contribute to the comprehensive training of the current graduation class of 62 midshipmen, future officers of the Spanish Navy who embarked on December 6.
