The ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ arrived at Cebu on March 20th and participated in the festivities commemorating the first round-the-world voyage; a ceremony organized by the local authorities and the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines. During her stay in port the main priority was to prevent COVID-19 infections, and strict protocols were implemented, like the fact that the crew was confined on board and did not disembark.
The training ship is currently sailing towards the Indonesian islands of Tidore and Ternate where she is scheduled to call in a few days.
The ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ is conducting her 93rd Training Cruise, which includes a round-the-world trip as one of the events to celebrate the 500 anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe.
The ship set sail from the province of Cadiz last August 24, and during the next months the ship plans to call at the most relevant places that the Spanish expedition of Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian de Elcano visited five centuries ago.
The ship's main task is to contribute to the comprehensive training of the current graduation class of 62 midshipmen, future officers of the Spanish Navy who, on this occasion, embarked on December 6 in Guayaquil (Ecuador).
