Last Friday, February 11th the €2 coin dedicated to the commemoration of the first circumnavigation of the Globe was presented at the dock of the city of Cadiz, next to the training ship ‘Juan Sebastian de Elcano’. This event is part of the commemorative acts celebrating this great feat carried out 500 years ago.
The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares Bueno, accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy, Admiral General Antonio Martorell Lacave. Also in attendance was the Government Delegate in Andalusia, as well as the Commercial Manager of the National Mint.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation ordered the issue of one million commemorative two-euro coins. The head of the coin shows the image of Juan Sebastián de Elcano, taken from the portrait kept in the Naval Museum of Madrid, with a globe in the background and the legend 1519-1522 Juan Sebastián de Elcano and ‘Primus Circumdedisti Me’ at the bottom.
The organization and development of the event was subject to the strict implementation of the health prevention measures established against the COVID-19 pandemic.
