The Spanish Navy training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ called at the port of Praia on April 6th as part of her 94th training cruise. The ship’s complement is 257 people including the 73 midshipmen from the 424th Spanish Navy graduation class and the 154th Marine Corps graduation class who are undergoing their third year of studies on board the ship.
This current cruise if the third and final voyage commemorating the 5th centenary of the first circumnavigation of the globe completed by 18 men led by Juan Sebastián de Elcano. The Spanish Navy tall ship is named after him.
Along with members of the Cape Verdean Armed Forces, a commemorative plaque of the five hundred years old feat was unveiled. Also scheduled on board was a Pledge of Allegiance to the flag ceremony for members of the Spanish colony living in Cape Verde.
