The ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ arriving at Buenos Aires

The Spanish Navy Training Ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ will call at the port of Buenos Aires on the morning of March 8th. This is the third port call of her 95th Training Cruise and the twenty-fifth time that the ship visits this city. A total of 241 people are on board, of which 74 are midshipmen belonging to the 425th graduation class of the Navy’s General Corps and 155th graduation class of the Marine Corps, who are now in their third year of training.

On this year’s cruise, the ship is making its sixteenth circumnavigation of South America, carrying the name of the illustrious sailor who made the first round-the-world voyage to different ports. After Tenerife and Rio de Janeiro, the voyage continues to Buenos Aires and Punta Arenas (Chile) on the east coast of South America; and on the west coast, the ship will visit El Callao (Peru) and will subsequently cross the Panama Canal. After that, she will arrive at the ports of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) and Puerto Limón (Costa Rica). Next, the U.S. ports of Pensacola and New York. Finally, the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ will cross the Atlantic on her voyage back to Spain, docking at the Naval Academy where the midshipmen will conclude their training.

After leaving the port of Tenerife on January 22nd, and after a month of oceanic navigation, the ship broke a record sailing at full sail all the time crossing the two hemispheres (first time in her 95-year history).

In port, the activities will focus on protocol visits by the Commander of the ship to different Argentine authorities. Likewise, at the invitation of the Spanish Ambassador to Argentina, Mrs. María Jesús Alonso Jiménez; and the ship's Commander, Captain Manuel García Ruíz, a reception will be held on board for these same authorities, for the Spanish community living in that city, and for a wide range of representatives of the local civil society at the political, economic and cultural levels.

A pledge of allegiance to the flag ceremony will also be organized on March 9th for those Spanish citizens residing in Argentina wishing to show their loyalty and commitment with Spain.

Open days of the ship will be held at the following times: - March 9th: 16:00 - 19:30; March 10th: 10:00 - 13:00 and 16:00 - 19:30; March 11th: 10:00 - 13:00 and 16:00 - 19:30.
