The frigate ‘Cristóbal Colón’ (F-105), ordinarily stationed in the Ferrol Naval Base (NW Spain), has sailed on Friday morning to join the SNMG-2, thus beginning a deployment that will last until mid-December. The farewell ceremony of the ship was presided over by the Commander of the 31st Surface Squadron, Captain Jesús Viñas Barciela.
The SNMG-2 is a Permanent Naval Group of the Atlantic Alliance, which operates in Mediterranean waters and forms the core of NATO’s Maritime High Readiness Force (VJTF-M), in the framework of the operation ‘Noble Shield’, as a response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
This deployment strengthens the commitment of Spain, and the Spanish Navy in particular with the Alliance, as well as the solidarity with the rest of the NATO member countries, thus supporting deterrence and collective defense at sea and from the sea.
The ‘Cristóbal Colón’, commanded by Cdr. Juan Carlos Prada, is the fifth frigate of the ‘Álvaro de Bazán’ class (F-100). 230 men and women will serve on abord during this 4-month deployment.
