After closing the Spanish Antarctic Bases ‘Juan Carlos I’ and ‘Gabriel de Castilla’ and calling at the Argentine port of Ushuaia on March 26, the Oceanographic Research Vessel ‘Hespérides’ has concluded the Spanish Antarctic Campaign 2024-2025.

During three months, a total of 29 projects, seven of which were conducted on board the Armada ship, have been carried out along the South Orkney Islands along the Antarctic Peninsula and the Bellingshausen and Weddell Seas. A successful campaign that included areas of study as wide and varied as oceanography, the study of climate change or biodiversity. These endeavors place Spain, once again, as a benchmark in scientific research, specifically in polar matters.

The Hespérides’, committed to environmental sustainability and concerned about the main impacts resulting from global warming, began the Spanish Antarctic Campaign on December 25, 2024 embarking the crew and scientists of the ‘Juan Carlos I’ Base. Subsequently, on December 28, the ship arrived in Antarctica to proceed with the openings of the two Bases.

It should be underlined that the Spanish Antarctic Campaign 2024-2025 has been possible thanks to the environmental commitment and meticulous planning by all the participating organizations, overcoming the logistic and technical challenges involved in operating in such a challenging and extreme environment, not lacking in difficulties.
