Today, Rota Naval Base witnessed the arrival of the first two NH-90 MSPT (Maritime Spanish Transport) helicopters, marking a historic milestone in the modernization of the Navy's naval capabilities. The delivery ceremony for the new helicopters was held at the Cádiz Arsenal presided over by its Commander-in-Chief, VA Rubén Rodríguez Peña.
These first two units will be integrated into the 14th Aircraft Squadron, part of the Aircraft Flotilla, as the spearhead of a progressive incorporation of new units reaching a total of three before the end of 2025. The arrival of four additional helicopters is planned for 2026, completing a total fleet of 7 navalized NH-90s.
These are the first NH-90s specifically adapted to operate in maritime environments within the Spanish Navy, representing a qualitative leap forward in terms of interoperability, versatility, and operational efficiency. This navalized variant is designed to operate from platforms with specific equipment for missions in the maritime domain, including tactical transport for special operations, medical evacuation, amphibious operations, and advanced logistic support.
As of September 2024, the personnel of the 14th Aircraft Squadron, home of the NH90 helicopters and related pilots and mechanics, have been developing their training, instruction, and instruction to ensure a safe and effective transition to this new aerial platform, laying the foundations for its full operational capability in the naval environment.
