The farewell ceremony for the Fleet Commander took place in a simple but poignant ceremony aboard the LPD ‘Castilla’.
This morning, the farewell ceremony for the Spanish Navy’s Fleet Commander (ALFLOT), Admiral Eugenio Díaz del Río, took place aboard the Amphibious Assault Ship ‘Castilla’ at Rota Naval Base. He held this post since February 23, 2021.
During his more than forty-five years as a naval officer, he served in many military and civilian organizations, both national and international, having commanded several ships and units. He participated in numerous exercises and operations. Born in Vigo (NW Spain), he entered the Naval Academy in August 1980, and upon completing his studies in 1985, he graduated as Lieutenant Junior Grade, ranking first in his class.
In September 2015, he was promoted to Rear Admiral, assuming the position of Chief of the Plans Division of the Spanish Naval Staff. In July 2016, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) in Northwood, United Kingdom, and was promoted to Vice Admiral in April 2018. In August 2019, he was assigned to the Naval Staff as Chief of the Plans Division. In May 2020, he was appointed Commander, Headquarters Maritime High Readiness (COMCGMAD), and in February 2021, he was promoted to Admiral and appointed Fleet Commander.
