The Armada's most advanced submarine, the first unit of the S-80 series, begins a new deployment to integrate with other allied forces into operation 'Noble Shield', a demanding NATO mission in a maritime environment of strategic interest.
The S-81 submarine ‘Isaac Peral’ set sail today from Cartagena Naval Base to join the allied operation ‘Noble Shield’, a mission aimed at strengthening deterrence and collective defense within NATO.
Following its last deployment, which ended in November 2025, the S-81 has completed a demanding training and readiness period, focused on advanced crew instruction, systems evaluation, and the execution of highly complex tactical exercises. This process has allowed the submarine to maintain and refine its technical and operational capabilities to face a demanding multinational scenario.
Operation ‘Noble Shield’, taking place in the Mediterranean Sea, will allow the submarine to operate fully integrated with other allied units under a NATO command structure, contributing to strengthen interoperability and the validation of joint procedures. In this context, the submarine's Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Fernando Clavijo Rey-Stolle, stresses that the ‘Isaac Peral’ offers "improved intelligence-gathering capabilities compared to the previous class, along with technologically advanced equipment that allows us to cooperate with other units at greater distances and with greater information accuracy." He underlined that these capabilities "promote integration and interoperability with the other units participating in this mission."
The CO also emphasized the comprehensive training of the crew, made up of 55 men and women: “The crew is the driving force behind this submarine. Advanced simulator exercises have allowed us to train for situations we are likely to encounter during the deployment, achieving a high level of operational readiness.”
Alongside the technical component, the human factor is crucial. Operating a submarine demands a high degree of cohesion and individual responsibility. “Vocation and a sense of duty are fundamental,” notes Lt-Cdr. Clavijo. “We live and work in a confined space, isolated from the outside world, which requires mutual trust, respect, and strong teamwork. Without this human balance, technology alone is not effective enough.”
From a strategic perspective, this deployment reinforces Spain's contribution to collective security. "A submarine allows us to monitor and deter threats without being detected, helping to prevent conflicts before they occur," explains the Commander. "This capability for anticipation and discreet surveillance strengthens national security and contributes to the long-term stability of Spain and NATO."
About the S-81 'Isaac Peral'
The S-81 'Isaac Peral' is the first unit of the S-80 series, built by Navantia for the Spanish Navy. Designed to operate across the full spectrum of naval missions, it stands out for its high degree of stealth, its advanced combat and sensor systems, and its capability to carry out surveillance, deterrence, force projection, and support missions for joint and allied operations.
Its participation in 'Noble Shield' marks its second period of integration into a NATO force, consolidating its progressive incorporation into the allied operational environment and reinforcing Spain's contribution to collective defense and international maritime security.
