Thesix units of the 41stEscort Squadron are currently deployed simultaneously in national andinternational exercises and operations, reaffirming their role asmulti-purpose escorts to the service of maritime security

Sixfrigates, six scenarios, and a single strategic message: sustainedforce generation capability. The Armada maintains the entire ‘SantaMaría’ class (F-80) deployed simultaneously, an uncommonoperational deployment for this squadron, projecting a naval presencefrom the Indian Ocean to the North Sea.

Theunits of the 41stEscort Squadron are operating simultaneously in highly demanding NATOexercises, real maritime security operations, and advanced combatcertification processes, covering a geographical area that comprisesthe main areas of strategic interest for Spain and the Alliance.

Inthe North Atlantic, the ‘Santa María’ is sailing towards herintegration into Exercise ‘Dynamic Mariner–Joint Warrior 26’,one of the most complex scenarios on the Allied calendar. Thedeployed force includes 25 surface vessels, 3 submarines and 3maritime patrol aircraft, in addition to other embarked aircraft. This deployment implies another historic milestone:it will be the first time the ship crosses the Arctic Circle, following specific technical preparation for operating in extremecold conditions.

Inthe central Mediterranean, the ‘Navarra’ is participating in‘Dynamic Manta’, an Allied benchmark in anti-submarine warfare. The ‘Reina Sofía’, meanwhile, is integrated into MARFIBEX-26,reinforcing the national amphibious capability alongside the Fleet'sAmphibious and Projection Group.

Butit is in actual operations where the impact becomes most significant. The ‘Canarias’ remains deployed in Operation ‘Atalanta’,while the ‘Victoria’ recently returned to the Mediterranean aftermore than four months in the Indian Ocean.

Duringher integration into Operation ‘Atalanta’ last October, the‘Victoria’ played a decisive role in the liberation of the crewsof the merchant ship ‘Hellas Aphrodite’ and the dhow used astender ship by pirates, preventing a potential resurgence of thethreat in the area. In total, 47 people were freed or rescued.

Onher transit back home, and after a technical stop in Valletta, thefrigate has joined NATO’s ‘Sea Guardian’ and ‘Noble Shield’operations linking the European mission with the allied collectivedefense.

Thedeployment is completed by the ‘Numancia’, currently undergoingan Operational Combat Qualification process, the final step beforefull operational readiness.

FORCEGENERATION AND MULTI-LEVEL STRATEGIC COORDINATION

Itis a very significant achievement to be able to deploy all sixfrigates simultaneously in such different scenarios and locations,”emphasized Commander Rafael Mira Calvo, Commander of the 41stEscort Squadron. In his opinion, it is an unequivocal sign of theArmada's capability to guarantee force readiness.

Behindthis operational demonstration are more than 1,200 personnel, who arepart of these six frigates. These crews have completed demandingperiods of readiness, individual and collective training, advancedexercises, and certification processes that ensure the units reachthe highest level of readiness before deployment. “This milestonerequires excellent teamwork involving the crews, the different levelsof maintenance and the ground support structures,” emphasized theCommander of the 41stSquadron.

Thecontinuous training and gathered experience of the personnel allowthese ships to integrate seamlessly into high-intensity exercises andreal operations, maintaining the most demanding standards of safetyand combat capability. “The training level of our personnel isamong the best in NATO and is so recognized by our allies,” statesCommander Mira. The human factor, both onboard and in the supportarsenals, constitutes the essential pillar upon which the Squadron'soperational readiness and the Armada's ability to generate andsustain a concurrent naval force are based.

GLOBALSUSTAINABILITY AND LOGISTIC RESILIENCE

Maintainingthe entire F-80 class deployed simultaneously poses a significantplanning, support and coordination challenge, involving both thecrews and the ground support units, particularly the CadizMaintenance Headquarters and the entire logistic chain.

Thechallenge is twofold: to sustain demanding systems, and doing soduring prolonged and distant deployments. The Logistics Plan, launched in 2022 and with a 2027 horizon, is framed within thiscontext, aimed at strengthening the sustainment and upgrading of theclass's capabilities in the final stage of their operational life.

Aftermore than three decades of service, the F-80s remain fully relevantas multi-role escorts. They retain solid capabilities in surface andanti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction operations, and dronedefense.

Complementaryto the F-100s —optimized for Force air defense— the F-80s shareescort duties in anti-submarine and surface warfare, both in littoraland blue waters, providing critical mass and versatility to theCombat Force.

Thissimultaneous deployment is a source of pride for the crews, anddemonstrates the Squadron’s cohesion,” says Commander Mira. “Theoperational pace, far from eroding morale, strengthens team spiritand the sense of belonging to a key unit of the Combat Force.”
