The Centenary of the Training Ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’, declared an event of exceptional public interest.

The Council of Ministers has approved a Royal Decree on May 26, declaring the Centenary of the training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ an event of exceptional public interest, recognizing its historical, cultural, and international significance, as well as the social and economic impact of the activities planned to mark this anniversary.

This declaration comes after the Defense Committee of the Parliament recently approved a non-binding resolution to promote the commemorative events planned for 2027 to mark the centenary of the launching of the Armada’s training ship. The initiative received majority support from parliamentary groups and highlighted the historical, cultural, and educational value of the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ as one of the principal symbols of the Armada and Spanish maritime tradition.

Launched on March 5, 1927 and delivered to the Armada on February 29, 1928, the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ has performed a fundamental dual mission: the training of future Navy officers and the representation of Spain in all the seas of the world, contributing significantly to defense diplomacy and the State's foreign action.

Over the past one hundred years, the tall ship has sailed millions of nautical miles and visited numerous countries, becoming a true floating ambassador for Spain and an international benchmark among the world's navies. Its prestige and history have served as inspiration for other international training ships, solidifying the ‘Elcano’ as an icon of our naval tradition.

During the parliamentary debate, the significance of this anniversary was also highlighted as an opportunity to strengthen Spain's international standing, showcase its naval heritage, and promote knowledge of maritime and defense culture, especially among younger generations.

The centenary celebrations will also provide a unique opportunity to bring the history, values, and legacy of the Armada closer to the public in general, reinforcing pride in belonging to an institution with centuries of service to Spain.

The commemorative events will take place between March 5, 2027, and August 17, 2028, marking the centenaries of the ship's launching and its registration in the Official List of Armada Ships (LOBA in its Spanish initials), respectively.
