Real Instituto y Observatorio de la Armada en San Fernando (ROA)
European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (CSEM-EMSC)
Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology (ORFEUS)
This workshop is part of the EC (INCO) project EERWEM with the aim to improve coordination of existing and developing monitoring infrastructures and associate the Northwestern African seismological research community to current and future European Research Area initiatives focused on seismic monitoring and risk analysis.
In this workshop we summarize the current state of the seismic monitoring infrastructures in the northwestern part of the Mediterranean region and place this in the context of the current knowledge, on-going projects and research plans with regard to seismic activity and risk in this region. Requirements and technical possibilities for transnational integration of monitoring and research infrastructures will be discussed and will be followed up, after the workshop, by the implementation a number of the proposed implementations.
Consequently the intended targets of this workshop are:
To accomplish these targets this workshop brings together seismological research institutes in primarily northwestern Africa with European key research institutes that have experience in the region and the EMSC and ORFEUS.
The workshop will consist of presentations and targeted workshop discussions.
A number of general overview presentations of current challenges in regional seismic risk research and comprehensive reports of the existing research infrastructure in northern Africa will be given.
Discussions will focus on the requirements for an efficient research (data) infrastructure, relevant available technical solutions and pragmatic plans for an efficient infrastructure across (and in) the northwestern Mediterranean region.
To keep the workshop efficient the organizers will restrict the number of participations to around 40 with first priority to northern African participants.
This agenda is tentavive and could be slightly modified.
