H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias visited the Submarine Branch and presided over the celebrations of the 125th anniversary of the launching of the ‘Peral’ submarine

His Royal Highness Felipe de Borbón, Prince of Asturias, visited this morning the Spanish Navy Submarine Base in Cartagena (Murcia) and presided over the celebrations of the 125th anniversary of the launching of the ‘Peral’ submarine which took place on September 8th 1888.

After the welcoming address by the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral General Jaime Muñoz-Delgado, His Royal Highness asked about the situation of the Submarine Branch and visited its facilities paying special attention to a demonstration of the S-80 simulator.

After the tour around the Submarine Base, the Prince of Asturias proceeded to the Plaza de Armas where he was welcomed by the President of Murcia Ramón Luis Valcárcel. He then reviewed the troops and presided over the ceremony commemorating the 125th anniversary of the launching of the ‘Peral’ submarine.

They subsequently went to the ‘Isaac Peral’ Room of the Cartagena Naval Museum where H.R.H. unveiled a commemorative plaque, thus concluding the scheduled festivities.

To celebrate this anniversary the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute, in collaboration with the Cartagena Naval Museum, has restored the submarine designed by the Spanish Navy engineer and officer Isaac Peral.
