A helicopter from the 10th Spanish Navy Aircraft Squadron carried out a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) of an 84-year-old British citizen who suffered a heart attack while on board the ‘Black Watch’, a Norway-based Fred Olsen Cruise Lines ship, while sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar.
The helicopter aid, requested by the Maritime Rescue Agency, took off at 12.17 pm from Rota Naval Base. The aircraft evacuated the patient, who had been previously stabilized, proceeding towards Cadiz hospital.
Both the rescue itself and the landing in Cadiz were somehow difficult operations since the liner had no landing deck, and the crew was not acquainted with this type of operations. The aircraft then landed in a parking lot near Punta San Felipe and from there the British patient was transferred to Cadiz hospital.
