After departing from Mahon on January 25th, and with fair winds, the training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ arrived at the French port of Sète. It is the 22nd time our training ship calls at a French port, and the first time she visits this city located in the Gulf of Lion.
The ship was welcomed by the Spanish General Consul in Montpellier, Juan Manuel Cabrera who was greeted by the ships’ officers, NCOs, midshipmen and ratings.
The ship had been invited to visit the city on the occasion of the ‘Escale à Sète’ festival which will take place in April, gathering more than a hundred sail ships. The event was presented at the Midshipmen’s wardroom before a hundred journalists and guests. One of the scheduled activities will be a rowing race with participating teams from the Spanish Naval Academy and the ‘La Graña’ School.
Both, ‘Casa de España’ and the ‘Escale à Sète’ hosted a celebration party for the Spanish midshipmen and part of the crew.
The ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ left the city of Sète sailing under full sail before heading towards Melilla, the last port of call of the first stage of her 85th training cruise.
