The Oceanic Patrol Vessel (BAM in its Spanish initials) ‘Rayo’ relieved last Monday the frigate ‘Navarra’ as part of the Spanish contribution to the EU-led counter-piracy operation ‘Atalanta’ in the Indian Ocean, after sailing for more than 31,000 nautical miles patrolling the area of operations during 140 days.
The ‘Navarra’ conducted a series of missions like escorting UN ‘World Food Program’ ships, monitoring the IRTC (International Recommended Transit Corridor) in the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia; training regional law-enforcement personnel and carrying out many friendly visits to trawlers and merchant ships.
During her deployment in operation ‘Atalanta’, the ‘Navarra’ arranged a meeting onboard with local authorities to inform them on the military activities carried out in the Indian Ocean on the one hand, and to get information on the social situation of the civil population on the other.
The frigate ‘Navarra’ is currently sailing back to her home port in Rota Naval Base.
