The Spanish Navy Submarine Service celebrates today its 100th anniversary, commemorating the signature of the Miranda Law on February 17th 1915 when King Alfonso XIII authorized the Minister of the Navy –Admiral Augusto Miranda– to procure up to four submarines with the necessary support and training material, as well as a special rescue ship.

To celebrate this 100th anniversary, the Spanish Navy has organized a series of festivities in Cartagena where the Submarine Service has its home base.
On February 12th Cartagena hosted the ‘Submarine Veteran’s Day’ followed by NATO’s Annual Conference of Submarine Commanders held in the Submarine Base Headquarters.
Furthermore, today’s ONCE lottery ticket was devoted to the Submarine Service, and next Thursday an exhibition of pictures, photographs and model ships will be inaugurated in Cartagena Naval Museum. Several conferences are scheduled in different venues and the Revista General de Marina will publish a special issue on the Submarine Branch, as well as a book on the history and life on board the submarines during these 100 years of service.
On the other hand, and coinciding with the celebration of this anniversary, the Spanish Navy’s High Council (an advisory council to the Minister of Defense), presided over by the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral General Jaime Muñoz-Delgado will meet, on this occasion, in Cartagena.
