The ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ (A-71).

The Spanish Navy Training Ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ will call at the Peruvian port of Callao on the morning of April 15th. This is the fifth port call of her 95th Training Cruise and the sixteenth time that the ship visits this city. A total of 246 people are on board, of whom 74 are midshipmen belonging to the 425th graduation class of the Navy’s General Corps and the 155th graduation class of the Marine Corps, who are now in their third year of training.

On this year’s cruise, the ship is making its sixteenth crossing of the Magellan Strait. After calling at Punta Arenas (Chile) on the east coast of South America the ship headed towards Callao (Peru) and will subsequently cross the Panama Canal. After that, she will arrive at the ports of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) and Puerto Limón (Costa Rica). Next, the U.S. ports of Pensacola and New York. Finally, the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ will cross the Atlantic on her voyage back to Spain, docking at the Naval Academy where the midshipmen will conclude their training.

In port, the activities will focus on protocol visits by the Commander of the ship to different Peruvian authorities. Likewise, at the invitation of the Spanish Ambassador to Peru and the ship's Commanding Officer, Captain Manuel García Ruíz, a reception will be held on board. Other activities will include a visit to the Peruvian Navy training ship ‘Unión’, the local Naval Academy and a fraternity luncheon with Spanish and Peruvian midshipmen.

A homage to those who gave their lives in the Battle of Callao on May 2nd 1866 will be arranged in the Mausoleum located in the Lima cemetery. A pledge of allegiance to the flag ceremony will also be organized for those Spanish citizens residing in Peru wishing to show their loyalty and commitment with Spain.

  • Saturday 15: 16.00 – 18.00 .
  • Sunday 16: 09.00 – 13.00 and 16.00 – 18.00
  • Monday 17: 09.00 – 13.00 and 16.00 – 18.00
  • Wednesday 19: 16.00 – 18.00
