Frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’ (F-104) to integrate into the SNMG-2

NATO's Standing Maritime Group Two ('SNMG-2') is a naval force comprising surface and air units from different allied nations. The main mission of the group is to provide NATO with an immediate operational reaction capability in naval scenarios. The Spanish Navy has maintained a continuous presence in these NATO group for more than thirty years.

The F-100 frigate ‘Méndez Núñez’, after completing an exceptionally complex period of readiness due to the current health situation, is ready to assume the tasks she has been entrusted with. The 176 men and women that make up her crew will be joined by the 17 Military Staff members and 32 other embarked personnel, including a Marine Corps operational security team and personnel from the embarked air unit. A total contingent of 225 people, one of the largest that our Armed Forces currently operate abroad.

Among the many tasks, the ‘Méndez Núñez’ will conduct maritime surveillance missions in areas of interest in support of operation 'Sea Guardian'. This operation has been fighting terrorism and illegal activities in the Mediterranean Sea since 2001. Naval presence while visiting Allied ports is also planned in order to strengthen the existing ties between state members.
