HISTORY
The Non-Commissioned Officers’ School is located north of the city of San Fernando (Cádiz). The present facilities were purchased by the Spanish Navy between 1775 and 1785. The neoclassical Charles III Building was completed in 1798. It has 5 patios; the central one, of circular shape, is covered by a stained-glass supported by eight Ionic columns. The staircase leading to the main courtyard is decorated with 17th century Delft Blue tiles.
Before being the NCO’s School, the building had been used for other purposes:
- 1798 to 1847.- Pilot Academy
- 1810 to 1820.- Isle of Leon Military Academy
- 1815 to 1819.- Lodgings for troops dispatched to the American colonies
- 1823 to 1828.- Garrison for constitutional troops
- 1833 to 1834.- Penitentiary for Carlist prisoners
- 1845 to 1870.- Military Naval School
- 1870 to 1912.- Captaincy General
- 1898.- Residence of officers returning from the American colonies
- 1913 to 1943.- Naval Academy
- 1943 to date - NCO’s School
