Zero Pollution Ship

Protection of the Coast and the Sea

The Spanish Navy is a pioneer in designing and building "Zero Pollution" ships.

This concept has evolved over the years starting with the removal of asbestos from all warships and shore facilities. The new materials used include artificial mineral fibers like mineral and silica wools, and aluminum and chromium silicates among others. Other synthetic organic fibers are being incorporated like aramid(Kevlar), asphaltic polyamides (Nylon) and even polyester fibers. Paintingmaterials have also evolved with more environmentally friendly characteristics.

PCB or PCt oils have been replaced by silicon oils or dielectric minerals. As of today, all our transformers are either dry or air-cooled.

Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases have also been replaced in all our facilities with R-134a gases in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and R-404a for freezing systems, avoiding the use of chlorine and bromine so harmful for theozone layer. Halons used in fire-fighting equipment have been substituted by high and low pressure sprayed water.

The new state-of-the-art platforms like OPVs and LHD "Juan Carlos I" have electric engines, minimizing the generation of CO2 so harmful for the greenhouse effect.
