The “Tajo” (M-36) is the sixth unit of the “Segura”-class minehunters built by Bazán in Cartagena.
She was launched in June 2004 and delivered to the Spanish Navy on January 10th 2005. Her sponsor was Alicia Cenalmor, wife of the Secretary General of Defense Policy Francisco Torrente.
Her Battle Ensign was presented by the Lady Mayor of Fuengirola, Mrs. Esperanza Oña on October 17th 2008.
The “Tajo” is the second Spanish Navy MCM ship with that name, and the third in the history of the Spanish Navy. The first one was a river gunboat built in France and used to support Army operations during the Third Carlist War. She was delivered in 1875 and sunk near Pasajes in May 1895 once the war was over.
The other “Tajo” was a “Nalón”-class minesweeper built in United States and transferred to the Spanish Navy in 1959. She was decommissioned in January 2002.
The ship has carried out two international deployments with NATO’s Mine Countermeasures Force (SNMCMG-2) and one deployment with EUROMARFOR. The “Tajo” has also participated in operation INAS BAHR in Kuwaiti waters.
At national level, the ship has participated in several maneuvers like GRUFLEX in Rota, SPANISH MINEX in the Balearic Islands and ROUTE SOURVEY in most Spanish ports.
