Naval Museum

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the First Voyage Around the World, Google Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Spanish National Commission of the 5th Centenary, presents the First Voyage Around the World Project, a digital portal that explores the details of the Magellan-Elcano circumnavigation and its impact on the European understanding of the world.

For the first time, users from all over the world will be able to learn details of Magellan and Elcano's expedition, dive into historical documents and maps, recall the route followed by the expedition or virtually visit the only ship that returned to Seville, the nao Victoria.

The Naval Museum participates in this project with several online exhibitions such as the adaptation of the exhibition We were the first ones: Magellan, Elcano and their voyage around the world held at the Naval Museum of Madrid between September 2019 and March 2020; a navigation through the painting by Elías Salaverría The Return to Seville of Juan Sebastián de Elcano after the First Voyage Around the World; the history of the creation of the model of the Nao "Victoria" and the rest of the models that participated in the voyage or an exhibition on the instruments and apparatus used in the expedition.
