The F-110 frigates are conceived as multi-role, oceanic escort vessels, but equipped with sensors and weapons specially optimized for littoral operation. As a multipurpose escort, it is designed to perform successfully in high-intensity scenarios in all major areas of naval warfare. In this regard, the F-110 programme will provide a series of surface ships equipped with state-of-the-art, high-performance weapons and sensor systems.
Furthermore, the ship will have a multi-mission space where different systems, equipment and specific personnel can be embarked, providing the ship with additional capabilities.
The F-110 programme also aims to increase national capabilities of the defense industrial sector, pursuing the highest possible level of nationalization, including both shipbuilding and procurement of equipment and systems.
Precisely with a view to reinforcing national industry and reducing risks for the F-110 program, a series of Technological Programmes (PROTEC F110) were launched in 2015. The PROTECs are an R&D&I commitment for the benefit of national industry in the field of shipbuilding. They develop cutting-edge technologies in the naval defense sector, and will strengthen national industry and maintain its competitiveness in the international market.
