Admiral Martínez-Merello joined the Spanish Navy in 1979. He graduated as Lieutenant Junior Grade at the Naval Academy on July 16th 1984.
As lieutenant he served on board several warships like frigate ‘Baleares’ and submarines ‘Tonina’ and ‘Galerna’. He was Executive Officer of submarine ‘Delfín’ and, as Lieutenant-Commander, he was posted as Chief of Operations of the ‘Alfa’-Task Group Staff on board aircraft-carrier ‘Príncipe de Asturias’.
He is a specialist in Submarines (1987) and Communications (1991); he has Naval Warfare diplomas of the Spanish Navy (1999) and the French Navy (1998). Ashore he was assigned to different Staff posts like the Logistic, Plans and Operations Divisions of the Spanish Navy. He has also worked at the EU Staff in Brussels and the Plans and International Relations of DIGENPOL (Defense Policy).
As Rear-admiral and Vice-admiral, he was Chief of the Communications and Information Systems (CIS) of the Joint Staff and the Defense Staff.
He has been Commanding Officer of minesweeper ‘Júcar’, submarine ‘Tramontana’, frigate ‘Numancia’ and the Submarine Flotilla.
Admiral Martínez-Merello speaks fluent French (SLP 4.4.4.4.) and English (SLP 3.3.3.3.)
After his promotion to Admiral on September 13th 2019, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy.
He has attended several key courses like the NATO Generals, Flag Officers and Ambassadors Course (2016) and the 39th National Defense Course (2018).
